Who’s excited for summer?!?!? We sure are! But in the meantime, we’re keeping our eyes peeled for exciting family activities to keep our camper’s and their families busy until summer starts. This weekend one of our office staff came across a piece on the Conejo Valley Guide about the exciting start of Conejo Valley Days starting this Thursday, May 3rd!

Conejo Valley Days celebrates its 56th year of bringing friends, families and community groups together for awesome family fun! The Conejo Valley Days celebration began with a small group of friends looking to gather and celebrate the local community and that small gathering has grown into an event that sees upwards of 55,000 visitors every year! As one of the main sources of fundraising for more than 20 local community groups and non-profits this awesome festival has something for everyone! From carnival games and rides to BBQ Contest to a Ladies Western Dress Contest, the Conejo Valley Days are the place to be this weekend!
The festival makes its home at the Conjeo South Creek Park and the weather should be perfect for a day out with the family enjoying the spring sunshine and supporting our local community as well. How much fun can one pack into an afternoon? Well, while it’s not Camp Keystone it sure does look like a great time for everyone.
Camp Keystone staffers are pumped for the summer season and we can’t wait to see everyone! Don’t forget to share your family adventures with us on Facebook!

The memory sharing continues with Assistant Camp Director Princess, who takes a moment to share with all of us the beauty of being raised in a camp environment and how that has impacted her life and her love of educating children!
****
I can’t imagine my career not including children. As a Kindergarten teacher, people constantly ask me how I have the patience to deal with 5 year olds who are needy, impatient, demanding, and impulsive. In my eyes, they are loving, witty, accepting, and eager to learn. I couldn’t picture a day without them. As summer arrives, my colleagues are ready to take a break, but I’m eagerly getting ready to switch hats from Kindergarten teacher to Assistant Camp Director.
It’s impossible to envision a summer without camp. In fact, I’ve never had a summer without camp! As a young child, I went to camp with my mom, who was a camp director, and “helped” her around the office. When I was old enough to attend camp at age 3, I looked forward to our luaus and swimming in the little pool. I returned to camp for the next 11 years not because I had to, but because of what camp offered me. Camp allowed me to develop self-esteem and confidence, make new friendships, challenge myself in non-academic activities, and while I didn’t realize it at the time, offered me some of the most important role models in my life.

I continued going to camp not because my mom was there, but because I was made a star. My counselors always made me feel special. I would go to camp hoping they would recognize me showing an act of kindness or trying something for the first time. I would come home with handmade awards that I would demand be hung on the fridge. My counselors taught me how to be a better person.
I often dreamed of the day I could be a counselor. From my different co-counselors I learned everything about campers from how to handle homesickness, motivate them, how to befriend and discipline children. I was confident that after my years at camp and my 2 years as a camper-in-leadership training I was ready.
I was a camp counselor for 8 summers while pursuing my undergrad degree in Psychology and my Masters in Elementary Education. Camp people are a unique breed. It’s not the high paying wages, the stylish uniform or the glamorous working conditions that attract us to camp; it’s the ability to change a child’s life, to be a friend to one in need, to watch children grow and succeed, and to do it all while having as much fun as the children.
It’s a unique challenge to be called up from being one of the colleagues to now being their supervisor. It was such an honor to be asked to become part of the Director staff. I knew my love and passion for children had been noticed by all. My position as a Director is exciting; no two days are the same. I still get to work with children in addition to inspiring and evaluating colleagues and bonding with parents over their child’s ups and downs.
Camp helps me become a better teacher while being a teacher helps me become a better Camp Director. Camp allows me to be uninhibited and remain without judgment, and often childlike in my new experiences. Camp Keystone has become my family. It is where I’ve made some of my dearest friends and created a lifetime of memories.

Our camp staff is tremendously proud of the hard work and effort put forth by our directors, Nemo and Shadow to once again maintain our ACA Accreditation! Not only do they spend hours and hours on thousands of pages of documentation for the ACA Accreditation process but they work extremely hard to create and implement programs with their fellow directors that make Camp Keystone a cut above the rest.
ACA Accreditation means a few very important things in terms of the quality of our programming, the safety standards we maintain and also the intensity of our staff training every year. But, really what it means to us and hopefully to our families is that here at Camp Keystone we think of your children as being members of our extended family, and we want only the very best for them!
Don’t hesitate to call us with questions about our certification or pop on over the ACA website for more information.

Choosing summer programming for your child can be difficult with all the choices available today. Summer camps can be especially challenging to navigate, with several options and different types of camp programs, it is important to know what to look for in a quality summer camp. And also, to figure out what type of program is right for your child.
When looking at summer camp programs it is important to take into account the following….
• What do you hope your child will gain from the camp experience?
• Think about your child’s interests. What are their favorite hobbies? Do they like sports? Would they benefit from an experiential program?
• What facilities does the camp have and how are they utilized for each age group?
• Is it a structured program or one that emphasizes a lot of free choice?
• Is the camp accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA)?
• Does this camp offer tours or open houses where you can meet with the staff?
Before picking a summer camp program do some research and jot down ideas about what kind of program you think would be ideal for your family. Take a moment to browse sites like the American Camp Association for helpful tips. Planning ahead for the summer is ideal so that your camp selection fits your child’s interests and will have a positive impact. There is nothing more important that getting all the benefits out of the camp experience and sharing those memories every day with your child.

In June of 1999, my son had just finished 1st grade and my daughter graduated from kindergarten. All of there friends were going to this fabulous camp named Camp Keystone, and my kids wanted to join them. I had a couple of friends who worked at the camp, and they told me that there was a position in the office that needed to be filled. I called on Friday, had an interview that day, and started work on Monday. As they say, the rest is history!
Camp Keystone is more than a job…it’s a family! My son is now a freshman in college and my daughter will be graduating high school in June. They have been fortunate enough to grow up at Camp Keystone, and have established friendships and created bonds that will last them a lifetime…as have I. I can honestly say that my closest friends have all been a part of the past and present Keystone family.

Elyse on vacation with her children...almost all grown up!
The summer of 2012 will mark my 14th summer at Camp Keystone. I love being a part of a program that only has the kids’ best interest at heart. There is not another camp out there that offers the facility, programming, activities, and staff that Camp Keystone does. I look forward to the craziness of the summer; the interaction with the parents and campers, and watching the campers grow, learn and develop new skills day in and day out. In fact, it is that craziness that keeps me sane!

There are few better memories than those made during summer camp! Those summer months when the days are filled with pure fun and excitement; and every day ends with a story that only your child can tell.
Choosing a summer camp is a tough decision with all the options available and pinpointing the best type of camp for your child is key to achieving summer camp success. While deciding between camps think of the value that a summer camp program will bring to your child’s summer vacation. Not only are summer camps massive fun and filled with a variety of learning opportunities but they also teach teamwork, confidence and encourage skill building.
The American Camp Association (ACA) recently did a survey of 5,000 families across the nation to come up with an overview of the Value of Camp which included the opinion of not just parents but the campers as well. And of course those are the opinions that matter! Read the results here and find out more about the ACA accreditation process here.

Participating in summer camp gives children the opportunity to develop current skills, uncover hidden talents and open up their world to new experiences that they can take with them long after their camping days are over. Here at Camp Keystone we value those shared memories that not only we see the kids building with each other but also those that we get to carry with us. Seeing children take leaps and bounds into confidence and independence is the greatest reward for any camp staffer.
We’re looking forward to our summer days ahead and the staff is looking forward to seeing all the new and returning campers!

Little did I know that one small moment when I was fourteen years old would shape the rest of my life as I knew it. During the summer of 1990 I experienced my first job, as a “Counselor in Leadership Training” at a local summer camp. Sure, kids were fun, the money ($11 per day) would fit my teenage “needs” of Friday night outings to the movies and the latest CDs, and of course extra socialization with girls never hurt a guy either. My first assignment – Tom Sawyer Island, the gold panning station to be exact. Imagine a large trough, murky water, sand, and enough “gold” pieces just to peak the interest of a seven year old. This one would be easy, I smiled, resigning myself to the nearest bench, supervising, and doing quite a good job of it, so I thought. My summer started out in this fashion each day, with me becoming more familiar with how to do just enough work to make my bosses happy, staying pretty much out of everyone’s way, simply going through the motions.
About two weeks into the summer it was the day to restock the gold at Tom Sawyer’s Island. After visiting the “treasure chest”, I carefully dug deep into the sand and hid the gold just far enough for a challenge, easy enough to ensure success. Up to my elbows in sand and water I remember a visit from a group of six year old boys.
“What are you doing?” they eagerly shouted.
“Well, I’m burying sunken treasure deep into the sand for us to mine.”
“Cooooool!” their response was genuine, and instantly sleeves were rolled up and some major digging began. Taking a few steps back into my “supervisor” role, I couldn’t help but realize how the mood suddenly changed. No longer was I engaged in the activity, and no longer did any of the kids have energy or desire to continue. At that moment I figured out a lesson that no amount of education could ever teach – I had the power to make this experience one that kids would remember for a lifetime. I quickly grabbed some more gold, and with a slight of hand placed it in each boy’s metal pan. Their screams and laughter told the rest of the story, and I had made gold panning something remarkable.
While it may seem like a simple moment, I began to “see” my days at camp different. I realized that if I could connect individually with kids, I could truly make any experience spectacular. I was no longer on the peripheral looking in; I was capitalizing on each minute to make a difference in the lives and excitement of children.
That summer proved to be a turning point in my development as a person. I realized there was so much more involved with interacting with kids than I could even imagine. I saw my role models in the directors of the camp, and I tapped into their expertise as often as they would let me. I began to see that every moment, no matter how large or small, with a child was important, and I lived all of those experiences with my campers. That summer I helped a seven year old conquer his fears of the waterslide, taught four kids how to tie their shoes, braved an overnight campout with ten six year olds, became an expert gold miner, tracked down countless missing backpacks and lunches, and truly made a difference in the lives of kids. No longer did the trials and dramatics of high school matter to me because I was doing something bigger. I was truly changing lives for the better.

I couldn’t imagine my life without working with kids. I knew this was going to be my path into the future, and this moment provided me with absolute clarity that I wanted to be able to take these small moments and turn them in to something magical.
Twenty-two years, thousands of kids, hundreds of arts and crafts projects, go-kart rides, team building games, and sixty-four overnight campouts later, summer camp has completely shaped the person I am today. My summer wouldn’t be complete without these experiences, and I haven’t had a summer since the age of 13 without them.
I find myself extremely fortunate to do something everyday that I truly love, with people that I consider to be a part of my family. My camp experience at fourteen led me down the path to become a counselor, camp director, and elementary school teacher. To this day I strive to make deep connections with kids, turning any old math lesson, archery session, closing round-up, or walk up Keystone’s monstrous hill to horses a moment that kids can celebrate, feel connected, and learn. I try to never miss a single opportunity with kids, and I completely believe in “getting my hands dirty” with their experiences and lives. Little did I realize all it took was some gold panning and muddy water to teach me this important lesson.

Arrr mateys! Jump on board and escape to a time when the Seven Seas held treasures aplenty and every day was an adventure! We love a good adventure and if you’re a lover of Camp Keystone then we know so do you!
As of January 13th, the tall boats the Lady Washington & Hawaiian Chieftain docked in Channel Islands until January 23rd and then Ventura Harbor until February 5th! What kid wouldn’t love the chance to step onto a real ship and get the chance to experience ship life? Or even what it might be like to be on one of two battling ships? There are two cruises available, one the mimics what the experience of being on the deck of a ship would be like during a skirmish. During the Battle Sail opportunity the ships maneuver around one another in 18th-century fashion and fire cannon using real gunpowder!! And the second is a more education-oriented experience that lets family and friends experience a day on a ship in just a few hours! If you’re more of a land lover, then take advantage of the walk-on tours that are also available during the weekdays!
Both harbors are full of fun things to do with the family, and lots of great restaurants and exciting events for making a full day of the excursion! We love planning an entire day around these types of thrilling events. What’s extraordinary about this kind of voyage is that you can plan the whole outing like a mini-getaway and aim to plan to do things you haven’t done before. But isn’t that the best part of trying new and exciting things with out kids? Sharing in experiences that capture the essence of excitement and the awesome memories that come with those moments is what we parents live to accomplish!!
One of our office staff is planning to take her five year old son in the next couple of weeks and we plan to post images on Facebook as soon as we can! Don’t forget to share your favorite Spring outings with us and we’ll share them with the rest of the Camp Keystone family and friends!
